Year 1:

In year 1, children are predominately taught to use practical objects to add and then transition this understanding to using a number line/hundred square:



Year 2:

In year 2, children continue with using the above methods initially and then move to looking at tens and ones followed by the column method. Please see videos below:

Year 3/4:

Children in this year group continue to use the column method for addition. However, it is also useful for children to break down their calculations if they are struggling. For example:


Year 5/6:

Children continue to use above methods to then support adding with decimals. They will progress from looking at 1 decimal place, to further decimal places. They will make connections with other areas of maths, for example money, and think about how they can break it down. Please see an example image and video below:
